Why train BJJ?

ADULT CLASSES

Rest assured that at Maven BJJ, Beginners to Jiu Jitsu are made to feel very welcome by both the Instructors and fellow students.

The academy is a place to come to forget about the stresses of every day life for the hour or two while you are here. It will not add stress to the already busy lifestyle, it will help you to feel calmer and more relaxed – regardless of you’re introverted or extroverted, nervous about coming through the doors for the first time or excited to be starting a new journey.

There are a TON of benefits to Jiu Jitsu – here are some of them below:

Self Defence

Jiu Jitsu has been marketed as one of the most effective martial arts for self-defence where the smaller and less athletic individual can defend themselves against larger and stronger assailants.  Jiu Jitsu relies on efficient techniques that are practiced in live grappling situations that are closer to simulating a one-on-one situation.

Great Workout/Get in Shape

After a Jiu Jitsu class, your body and gi will be  sweaty – regardless of your fitness when starting. You don’t have to be fit to start, as you train you will become fitter. People will often join in poor shape and within months be making massive improve in their physical shape. Jiu Jitsu is a great workout that incorporates every part of your body. From the unique warm ups to the technical movements throughout the classes, you will be expanding and contracting muscles you might not of used before.  BJJ classes can burn between 400 to 1,000 calories per session depending on your size and the pace and intensity of your training.

Learn Something New

One of the ways to keep your brain sharp and find happiness in life is to keep on learning new skills in life. Once we leave school and move on to the workforce, life sometimes can be a little monotonous and dull. Unlike going to a traditional gym or or a spin or aerobics class, you are constantly learning new self-defence, sport and body movement skills in Jiu Jitsu.  Jiu Jitsu is constantly evolving with new techniques and the learning for both the beginner and the more experiences students.

Meet New People

Sometimes it is hard to meet likeminded people. Jiu Jitsu classes are a great way to meet new people. Because of the close contact nature of Jiu Jitsu, you will often make great friends very quickly. Part what makes Jiu Jitsu practitioners very friendly is that they work out their stresses on the mat.

More Fun Than a Regular Gym

Most of us have been members of a regular gym and we know the routine. There is leg day, chest day, back day, cardio day and it is a very monotonous routine that can get very boring, very quickly. There is also a feeling of individualism and isolation when it comes to going to a regular gym. You might have a workout partner or friend, but in many cases you go in there and workout with the weights, machines, and treadmill on your own for an hour or so and go home. There is not the same sense of community and other interaction with others like there is a Jiu Jitsu class.

Test Your Comfort Zone

In life we often get comfortable in our routines of school, work, socializing, family time, and paying bills. There is safety in the comfort of doing what we do and knowing what we know. In many cases we are good at being a good employee, business owner, friend or parent. What happens when you start something new from scratch as an adult where it is almost guaranteed you will struggle for a certain amount of time before you start getting better? While the struggle is painful, the personal growth and pride from overcoming a challenge is very rewarding and can open your eyes to other opportunities in life to help reach your human potential.

Relieve Stress

Life is very stressful with work, bills, schools, family, and traffic to name a few. Stress can cause many physical and mental health issues including headaches, high blood pressure, heart problems, diabetes, skin conditions, asthma, arthritis, depression, and anxiety. Training in Jiu Jitsu causes many chemical reactions in the body that help relieve stress, forget about our problems in life, and feel more satisfied and positive about life.

Learn Humility

Through the process of training and sparring in Jiu Jitsu in the right environment, you will become a more humble and empathetic person. When you are starting as a new white belt, it will be a very overwhelming experience where you will be learning and practicing body movements and concepts that will challenge you both physically and mentally. There will be times where you will be lost and feel inadequate, after all you’re learning something new. Yet, at the same time, the right coaches and training partners who have gone through the same experiences will be helping you learn in a very patient manner. These experiences along your journey will teach you very practical human lessons on being kind, humble, patient, empathetic, and nurturing that you can apply to all aspects of your life.

Build Confidence

The combination of many of the points above including learning something new, meeting new people, becoming more humble, testing your comfort zone, and learning to deal with stress are all parts of a recipe for building your self-confidence.

CHILDREN CLASSES

Often parents may have some hesitation in getting their child involved in BJJ, here are some amazing benefits why you should try it for your child:

Self Defence

with BJJ is unique in its real-world application. Physical confrontations, especially with those not trained will end up on the ground, leaving potential victims vulnerable, but this fighting style takes the perceived disadvantage and turns it into a strength through many grappling techniques.

No Head Shots

BJJ is a grappling martial art and therefore avoids head shots. Head shots and striking can cause trauma to the brain. Strking arts are then having to nagivate through kata’s (which does not offer a real life scenario or combative striking which can cause damage. Jiu Jitsu offer live resistance but with the danger of head shots.

Healthy Habits

Kids like adults can also deal with struggles and being overworked. Learning a martial art can help to reduce stress and anxiety, while simultaneously promoting healthy habits such as fitness

Humility

Another benefit of BJJ is teaching humility. One of the critical components of any martial art is learning how to be humble in both victory and defeat. As part of a community of students, your child will learn how everyone works toward the betterment of the whole.

Confidence

BJJ is challenging and requires focus and sustained discipline which leads to the development of confidence.

Anti Bullying

Parents can sometimes worry that if there child understands how to grapple or be able to handle themselves that they may become a bully. This is the furthers thing from the truth. They will be more understanding and calmer as result and far less likely to bully. They will have the added benefit of being able to stand up to bullies as well.

Friendship

Friendship is a natural progression in training. While it may seem strange that students who are pitted against one another in sparring sessions would be friends, the mutual struggle and practice lead to commonality and community. Jiu Jitsu also teaches children to face the unknown with confidence, which means they are often more willing to introduce themselves to other students.

Goal Setting

The journey towards becoming good at involves a lot of stepping stones. Your child will start as a white belt, learning the fundamentals before progressing through each subsequent phase in their training. However, this bottom-up approach is an excellent way to demonstrate goal setting and the need for practice. There is a sense of accomplishment in achieving even the smallest objectives, which will help your child plan and prepare for other projects in the same way.

Focus

Another typical skill children can develop during training is focus. It is critical to pay attention to your surroundings and position while training so you can analyse the best path forward when sparring. However, this level of focus can be taken beyond training into other aspects of your child’s life, including their schoolwork, sports, and relationships.

Dealing with Failure

We all fail at times and it is how we bounce back that counts. Your child will inevitably experience failure during training, but they will learn that it is not the end of their journey. They will understand that failing is a part of the work. Students become empowered by failure, motivated to do better and improve their skills. We want them to achieve great success, and a healthy relationship with failure is essential to real growth.
